Mr. Hall.
With the presence in London of so many Commonwealth representatives and of Mr. Macdonald himself it does seem a most favourable opportunity for making unofficial soundings or at least of making some of the Commonwealth representatives aware of the importance which H.M.G. attaches to the development of the Universities of Hong Kong and Malaya and of the assistance which is being given to them from central funds.
The Inter-Universi ty Council at its quarterly meeting on Thursday 28th September, discussed this matter. Sir Alexander Carr-Saunders who has recently returned from his visit to the University of halaya and Mr. Sloss, formerly Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hong Kong both reported that local opinion in Malaya and Hong Kong was now in a particularly receptive mood for a lead for further assistance to the two Universities. The Council agreed to send an official communication to the Colonial Office on this point and this will be sent shortly.
